Summer Plumbing Tips

Summer is a time for traveling, relaxation, barbecuing, and entertaining. Do not let plumbing issues get in the way of your summer fun. Here are our top 5 Summer Plumbing Tips to help keep your home’s plumbing running smoothly this sunny season.

Inspect All Drains Outside Of Home

Check downspouts, gutters, and underground storm lines. Look for overflowing drain lines, water spilling over the top of gutters from the roof, water pooling, and confirm sump pump water is discharging correctly.

Locate Your Main Water Shut Off Valve

You, and other members of your household, need to know where the main shut-off valve is located. In a plumbing emergency, you will be prepared to shut the water off quickly and avoid flooding your home.

Check Washing Machine Hoses

Summer months tend to produce loads of laundry, subsequently, creating a higher demand for your washer. Look at your washing machine hoses and make sure the connections are tight and there are no visible leaks or bulges in the hose. If you have a rubber hose you may want to consider replacing it with a no-burst hose. They are encased in a woven metal sleeve that prevents weak spots in the rubber. They are available at your home improvement stores for about $20. This is an easy DIY project that could save you $$$$ in water damage to your home.

Take It Easy On Your Toilets

Did you know summertime is the time toilets get clogged the most? Why? The kids are out of school and home all day. Talk to your family about how much toilet paper they use and what they should and should not flush down the toilet. The following are items that should not be thrown down the toilet:

  • Flushable Wipes
  • Baby Wipes
  • Cleaning Wipes
  • Cotton Balls
  • Q-Tips
  • Dental Floss
  • Paper Towels
  • Plastic Baggies
  • Dryer Sheets
  • Feminine Products
  • Prescription Drugs

Turn Down Water Heater

Are you planning a vacation? We suggest that you set your water heater in vacation mode. If yours does not have a vacation setting, set it to the lowest setting possible. Just remember to turn it on again as soon as you get home. As a result, you will save energy and money. Remember to turn your water heater back on to set it to no higher than 120°F to reduce to risk of scalding.
